L’Associazione Il Gabbiano – noi come gli altri

The association of volunteers “Il Gabbiano – Noi come gli altri” (The Seagull – We like all the rest) is located in Milan and has been active since 1987. The Association provides help and support to disabled people and their families living in the Baggio area of south-west Milan
However it is also active throughout the entire Milan area including its suburbs.

Its mission is to help bring about positive changes so that people with disabilities feel less isolated and are more empowered to lead independent lives as much as is possible. The Association’s main activities are carried out at weekends and include moments of fun and creative entertainment through art,theatre workshops and games .

A series of happenings and celebrations are planned and organized during the year – Christmas dinner, Italian Carnival in February, birthdays, summer holiday events and a wonderful New Year’s Eve supper. The Gabbiano Association also stages daily excursions and trips in and around the Baggio district.  Its members are keen to raise awareness about issues affectingpeople with disabilities so as to promote and support their social inclusion. Gabbiano participates and helps to organize exhibitions, local festivals and promotional events to draw attention to its mission. Its venue is in Via Ceriani 3 alongside Baggio Old Church.

In recent times, Gabbiano has helped to renovate the local priest’s residence at the Old Church as well as contributing to building a new Daily Centre for 25 disabled people including sleeping accommodation for 10 . All works have been funded by collections carried out by the Association and its volunteers. In 2000 the Association created GabbianoServizi – a cooperative that runs some professional and structured services in collaboration with the volunteers of the association.
